The documentary not only highlights the emotional meaning of Sutherland's song, but also celebrates the collaborative efforts of the students and faculty of Beachburg Public School.

ABOUT THE VIDEO

Adrian's team received an email in early 2022 from Steve Pritchard, a teacher at Beachburg Public School in Ontario. Inspired by the themes of truth and reconciliation, the grade 6/7 and 7/8 students embarked on a mission to create a visual representation of their learning, incorporating elements from Sutherland's song into their project.

"Our hopes are to create a video around the song Walk With Me, involving both younger and older grades, that represents our new learning about truth and reconciliation. This project will involve tracing of hands and feet to be used to create a mural of a heart, and posters with statements reflecting the 94 calls to action..."

Adrian and his team loved the idea so much that they decided to help the student-driven project in a bigger way. They coordinated with the school, travelled to Beachburg with a videographer, and spent two days capturing footage of the students creating their project.

ABOUT THE SONG

“Walk With Me is about going on a journey together, and sharing the same path, even if you both come from different places. With reconciliation in the forefront, it’s more important now than ever before that we take time to walk with each other, and be willing to see the world through the eyes of another. This song also pays tribute to my grandparents, Moses and Juliette, and traditions of the past,” says Sutherland, who wrote the song in 2019 with Serena Ryder and released it on his JUNO-nominated debut solo album "When The Magic Hits" in 2021.

Walk With Me was expertly produced, mixed, and engineered by acclaimed producer, Colin Linden, who also played guitar on the track. In his latest song My Rebel Spirit, Sutherland’s distinct perspective as an outsider fuels his creativity, as he channels his rebellious spirit into his music.

"Living in the remote north and so far away from the music industry has many challenges. I have a different perspective than most people who live in urban areas, and because of that, I can be misunderstood," said Sutherland. Despite this, Adrian embraces his rebellious spirit, emphasizing the importance of staying true to oneself even in the face of adversity.

“The main message of My Rebel Spirit is that not everyone is going to accept you for who you are, so don’t let it get you down. His team coordinated with the school, sent in a videographer, and spent two days capturing footage of the students creating their project. It became Adrian's official music video for Walk With Me, receiving a national television broadcast premiere on ET Canada on Wednesday, September 28, 2022.

MUSIC VIDEO CREDITS

Adrian Sutherland, Executive Producer
RoseAnna Schick, Producer
Kash Tahen, Editor & Colourist
Brian Gregory, Director of Photography
Justin Stephenson, Creative Consultant

SONG CREDITS

Performed by Adrian Sutherland
Written by Adrian Sutherland & Serena Ryder
Produced, Mixed & Engineered by Colin Linden
Guitar by Colin Linden
Strings by Chris Carmichael
Mastered by João Carvalho Mastering
Adrian Sutherlandtag:adriansutherlandmusic.com,2005:Post/72557312023-08-11T13:13:54-04:002023-11-03T17:32:43-04:00Notawe (Father): Heartfelt Single is Sutherland's First All-Cree Song

In a moving tribute to the enduring bonds of family and the power of music to express heartfelt emotions, Adrian Sutherland has released a touching new single sung and performed entirely in his first language, Omushkegowuk Cree.

Notawe (Father) - pronounced Noh-TUH-wee - is the first single from Sutherland’s upcoming second album. The song pays homage to his First Nation Indigenous culture and language.

“Notawe means ‘my father’ in my language and can also mean ‘my Creator,’” says Sutherland. “It’s a song about fathers who have departed to the spirit world, but it’s not so much about the grieving process. It’s about finding the will to move on and live life on your own after your parents have passed, no matter how hard things get.”

Notawe (Father) was written by Adrian Sutherland and produced by Colin Linden, which marks the second time the two have collaborated. Linden produced seven tracks on Adrian’s JUNO-nominated debut album When The Magic Hits, recorded remotely during the pandemic with Sutherland in Attawapiskat, Linden in Nashville, and other musicians in their own studios. Sutherland and Linden worked in person for the very first time in Linden’s Nashville recording studio in May 2023.

Notawe (Father) was recorded and mixed by Colin Linden and Michael Stankiewicz. Performing on the track are Sutherland on vocals and acoustic guitar, Linden on acoustic, electric, and bass guitar, Jeff Taylor on accordion, Jim Hoke on tenor and baritone saxophones, and Jerry Roe on drums. It was mastered by the legendary Greg Calbi (Sterling Sound, NJ), who has worked with big names like Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Norah Jones, and John Mayer.

The beautiful artwork was designed by Nick Perreault, Adrian’s long-time art director, featuring one of Sutherland’s sons, Geeshig Sutherland, alongside a ‘Young Brave’ circa 1903. Inspired by a scrapped design sample 10 years ago, Sutherland remembered ‘Young Brave’ and revisited the design. It turned out to be perfect for Notawe - especially since the ‘Young Brave’ is about the same age as Geeshig, with similar features too.

Notawe (Father) is one of two all-Cree songs on Adrian’s upcoming ten-track album, which will be released in the spring of 2024. Listen on all streaming platforms here.

Adrian Sutherlandtag:adriansutherlandmusic.com,2005:Post/72191422023-06-02T10:55:26-04:002023-06-02T10:55:26-04:00Adrian Returns to Winnipeg for First Solo Show
Following his Southern Ontario Tour in March and recording his next album at Nashville in May, Adrian Sutherland is kicking off his summer show schedule on June 24 at The Park Theatre in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

“I can’t wait to return to Winnipeg,” says Sutherland. “I have a lot of fans from the city who are active on my social media, so I’m looking forward to coming and performing live for them in their hometown.”

Adrian first performed in Winnipeg with his band Midnight Shine back in 2018. A soaring song about striving for better.

“We all have people in our lives that make us want to be better. For me, it's my wife and family,” says Sutherland. “I live in a remote community in the North, and when I travel for music I have to be away from home for many days at a time. Even when it's just one show, it’s always a far way to go. As the song goes... ‘If I had two wings, I would learn to fly’… then I would be able to be home to them sooner.”

Better was written by Adrian Sutherland and Tim Vesely, who also produced the track out of The Woodshed Studio in Toronto. The beautiful artwork is from Nick Perreault, Adrian’s long-time Art Director, with the following symbolism in the design:

o The Northern Lights and starry sky represent Adrian’s Northern home.
o The two circles are two wedding rings, representing his love for family.
o The bird in flight reflects the “two wings” in the song lyrics.
o The bird is a Canadian goose, from an actual photograph captured by Adrian’s wife, Judy.
o The goose represents the annual spring hunt on James Bay, the most important time of year for Adrian to be at home, on the land, with family.

Adrian Sutherlandtag:adriansutherlandmusic.com,2005:Post/71058402022-11-18T17:39:19-05:002023-02-10T14:40:39-05:0047th American Indian Film Fest: Music Videos In Official Selection
Adrian Sutherland’s innovative music videos continue to be celebrated by film festivals around the world, with two in official selection this week at the 47th American Indian Film Festival.

Right Here and Magic Hits will both screen on Tuesday, November 8, as part of the Music Program at the Koret Auditorium in San Francisco. Both videos were created during the pandemic while Sutherland was cut-off from the rest of the world during two full years of isolation in his remote Northern Canadian home.

ABOUT THE MUSIC VIDEOS

The clever concept for Right Here was inspired by travel selfies, which typically depict an ever-changing world around a constant subject. For this video, Sutherland was tasked with capturing 1600 selfies on his iPhone over a period of six weeks. At first it seemed overwhelming, but once he got the hang of it, he was able to make some fun moments happen by getting family members in the shots, his hunting friends, one of his dogs, and even a great-horned owlet that he rescued a month earlier.

Magic Hits is a split-screen performance with footage shot in three places – Attawapiskat ON, Toronto ON, and Nashville TN. The poignant music video presents Adrian on vocals, strolling and singing in his remote location while featured ‘alongside’ the legendary artists who perform on the track: Colin Linden (guitar), Janice Powers (organ), Gary Craig (drums), and John Dymond (bass). “There must be more to life than this, standing on the sidelines, waiting for the highlights, yah…” sings Sutherland while pensively contemplating his northern isolation.

Right Here and Magic Hits were made by animator and filmmaker Justin Stephenson, with creative producer and production manager RoseAnna Schick, and Sutherland as executive producer. They are the same music video team behind the highly acclaimed Politician Man, which screened at last year’s 46th American Indian Film Festival, and won awards at several festivals including the 73rd Yorkton Film Festival, the 25th First Glance Film Festival Philadelphia, Moving Parts Film Festival, Indie Shorts Buenos Aires, Indie Shorts Miami, Phoenix International Short Film Festival, London Music Video Festival, and Toronto International Nollywood Film Festival.
Adrian Sutherlandtag:adriansutherlandmusic.com,2005:Post/70720712022-09-30T16:22:10-04:002023-02-10T14:38:27-05:00Walk With Me: Student-Led Initiative Inspires Official Music Video
The idea for Adrian Sutherland’s new music video Walk With Me came right out of the blue. And quite literally so. It was last December when a teacher reached out to say his students had taken part in the inaugural National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. They wanted to do something to make a difference, and had an idea.

"I teach at an elementary school in Beachburg, Ontario. My grades 6/7 and 7/8 classes are looking for ways to continue with ideas from the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. We heard the song Walk With Me by Adrian Sutherland and decided to reach out," wrote Steve Pritchard.

"Students are genuinely interested in finding ways to be part of the healing moving forward, and are trying to find practical ways to do this in their lives now. Our intentions are to understand the steps needed to heal our community and nation from past wrongdoings. Our hopes are to create a video around the song Walk With Me, involving both younger and older grades, that represents our new learning about truth and reconciliation. This project will involve tracing of hands and feet to be used to create a mural of a heart, and posters with statements reflecting the 94 calls to action..."

And so began a beautiful idea which grew into something even more. Now, one year after first learning about reconciliation, and becoming inspired to make a difference in their own way… Beachburg Public School will gather together in their gymnasium to watch Walk With Me for the very first time.

ABOUT THE VIDEO

Says Steve Pritchard: “This past year has been an incredible journey. It’s amazing to see this video come together the way it has. More importantly, it is wonderful to see that it has raised awareness around injustices of the past. It has touched so many students' lives, and provides hope and next steps for the future. Thank you so very much for partnering with us on this journey.”

Walk With Me was produced by RoseAnna Schick and executive produced by Adrian Sutherland. It was created by editor and colourist Kash Tahen, with footage captured by director of photography Brian Gregory. Justin Stephenson, who created five of Sutherland’s previous music videos including the multi-award winning Politician Man, provided creative consulting. Walk With Me received its national broadcast premiere on ET Canada on September 28.

This video happened because of Steve Pritchard, his inspiring students, and the support of Beachburg Public School. Everyone put their hearts and souls into it, along with feet and hands. It was an honour to capture such a special project, and to see the love and spirit put into their process.

ABOUT THE SONG

“Walk With Me is about going on a journey together, and sharing the same path, even if you both come from different places. With reconciliation in the forefront, it’s more important now than ever before that we take time to walk with each other, and be willing to see the world through the eyes of another. This song also pays tribute to my grandparents, Moses and Juliette, and traditions of the past,” says Sutherland, who wrote the song in 2019 with Serena Ryder and released it on his JUNO-nominated debut solo album When The Magic Hits in 2021.

Walk With Me was produced, mixed and engineered by acclaimed producer and legendary artist Colin Linden, who performs guitar on the song.
In recognition of his first JUNO Award nomination for his debut solo album, When The Magic Hits, Adrian shared that none of this would be possible without the building of his remote 'SeaCan Studio' where he worked interactively with producers to record vocal and acoustic guitar tracks for the debut album.

During the exciting and busy week leading up to the JUNO Awards, Adrian was able to perform in-person at JUNOfest's Indigenous Artist Showcase, and the TD Music Concert at Union Station.

Adrian was also invited to perform on The Marilyn Denis Show - and learned after the taping that he was the first musical guest in the CTV studio in over two years! The Marilyn Denis Show is a daytime television talk show on CTV that airs on weekdays across Canada. "What an honour it was to meet Marilyn and perform Magic Hits live and in person," he said.

What Are You Scared Of?
For his latest music video, Adrian Sutherland asked friends and fans to answer one question: “What are you scared of?” And boy, did they deliver…

Scared invites viewers on an eye-opening journey through things that people are most afraid of. Starting with typically creepy critters like ‘snakes’ and ‘spiders’, the video gradually shifts to a deeper place, revealing more personal and sensitive subjects as we move along. Some are heart-breaking while others are painfully honest. Each message is visually articulated in its originally submitted form, resulting in 110 individual ‘cards’ synced to the song’s tempo, and woven together using stark hand-drawn black-and-white animation.

From the very beginning to final fading frames, the emotional ride of Scared captures and holds attention through a wide spectrum of fears – simply external, deeply internal, even profoundly existential – before circling back to the realm of love. The underlying message? The world needs more love, because love truly can conquer all.

Especially the things we are scared of.

ABOUT THE VIDEO

Scared is the 5th music video for Adrian Sutherland created by award-winning filmmaker Justin Stephenson (The Secret Path animated film) in collaboration with Adrian’s manager and video producer RoseAnna Schick.

Says Justin: "Scared is a moving song about fears and how love is what we all need in the places where we're scared. RoseAnna came up with the idea of having people submit written messages about their fears, and people were quite vulnerable with what they sent us. The video is about sharing these messages and making a space for Adrian's meaningful song to speak to that spot in us that is scared of things."

Says RoseAnna: “Fear is universal. Every one has a fear of some kind, and the lyrics in Scared lend themselves to exploring what we are afraid of. We cast a net to see what people would send in – and ended up with so many amazing messages. We felt an obligation to honour everyone who trusted us with their fears, and were able to use every single submission. The video turned out to be surprisingly emotional, hauntingly memorable, and definitely relatable – we’re sure that everyone who watches will resonate with at least one of the fears, if not more.”

AWARD-WINNING VIDEO TEAM

Stephenson and Schick, along with Sutherland as executive producer, have been recognized previously for their collaborative music videos. The first project they did together was in 2019 for Sutherland’s protest song Politician Man, which won Best Performing Arts & Entertainment at the 2020 Yorkton Film Festival (Canada’s oldest film festival). This year they are nominated again for the same award at Yorkton, this time for the groovy animated live-action dance video Respect The Gift. The coveted ‘Golden Sheaf Awards’ will be handed out Saturday, May 28 in Yorkton, Saskatchewan.
Adrian Sutherlandtag:adriansutherlandmusic.com,2005:Post/69175172022-03-08T21:02:45-05:002022-03-08T21:08:33-05:00First JUNO Nomination A Decade In The Making

Adrian Sutherland's debut solo album, When The Magic Hits, was released September 17, 2021 to much acclaim. On March 1, he received his very first JUNO Award nomination, in the category of Contemporary Indigenous Artist Or Group Of The Year.

“I couldn’t be happier about this news,” says Sutherland. “Even though it’s my first JUNO nomination, I’ve been working hard at my music career since 2011. It means a lot to see that my new album is being recognized by the industry.”

Like many musicians, roots-rock artist Adrian Sutherland spent time during the pandemic to record and release an album. But unlike many, before he could even begin, he first had to construct a studio in remote Northern Canada.

When the pandemic began in March 2020, Sutherland found himself fully isolated in Attawapiskat First Nation – a fly-in-only location that cancelled all flights. With zero access to studio infrastructure, he’d have to fully DIY it. Adrian spent the summer learning how to work remotely, and making plans. By fall, he began constructing and gearing up recording space in a metal shipping container located in his backyard. By spring of 2021, he was finally able to begin working from inside his ‘SeaCan Studio’ to record tracks for When The Magic Hits.

ABOUT THE ALBUM

When The Magic Hits is an impressive solo debut. Seven tracks were produced, engineered and mixed by GRAMMY Award-winning Canadian-born producer Colin Linden, who worked remotely from Nashville while Adrian remained isolated in Attawapiskat. Colin brought his legendary guitar talents to the tracks, helping bring Adrian’s music to life with a whole new depth of heart and soul.

FUN FACT… Colin Linden is also nominated for this year’s JUNO Awards, in the category of Blues Album Of The Year for his record bLOW, which by coincidence was released on September 17 – the same day as Adrian’s album.

Featured on the tracks produced by Colin are his wife Janice Powers on keyboard and organ. Jerry Roe (Nashville) and Gary Craig (Toronto) both contributed drum tracks, with John Dymond (Toronto) on bass. Adding to the magic is Chris Carmichael. It was Colin’s 11th hour decision to bring Carmichael into the mix, who added stellar sounds of a full string quartet to two ballads – Once That Was You and Walk With Me. It was only later that Sutherland learned Carmichael has performed on seven GRAMMY-winning records and 25 gold and platinum albums!

Two of the album tracks – Right Here and Make Me Better – were produced, engineered and mixed by Tim Vesely, who also co-wrote the songs, and plays guitar and bass on the recordings. Adrian worked remotely with Tim, producing out of The Woodshed Studio in Toronto. Vesely brought in Colin Cripps for electric guitar, and Lyle Molzan for drums.

In addition to Vesely, When The Magic Hits features co-writes with brothers Chris Gormley (The Trews) and Matt Gormley (Daylight for Deadeyes), Jay Semko (The Northern Pikes), Scott Dibble (Hemingway Corner), Serena Ryder, and Colin Cripps (Blue Rodeo).
Adrian Sutherlandtag:adriansutherlandmusic.com,2005:Post/68876572022-02-03T13:43:20-05:002022-02-09T18:03:41-05:00Heart Of Gold Turns 50!
Canadiana classic Heart Of Gold is turning 50 this month! Released on Neil Young’s Harvest album on February 14, 1972, the song has surely inspired countless musicians since it first hit the airwaves.

Jump ahead 20 years since it’s release… In 1992, 16-year-old Adrian Sutherland in the remote northern community of Attawapiskat borrowed a harmonica from an Elder, fashioned a homemade harness using a coat-hanger, two sticks and elastic bands, and taught himself to play Heart Of Gold: “I grew up in an isolated area and listened to a lot of music, especially once I started playing guitar. Neil Young was one of my biggest musical inspirations, and Heart Of Gold is one of my favourite songs,” says Sutherland.

Jump ahead another 27 years… In 2018, Adrian and his band Midnight Shine released a unique version of Heart Of Gold: “We wanted to cover it, but in a way that’s different from everyone else. So we gave it a little ‘shine’ of our own.” Their timely take on the timeless classic honours the heart and soul of the original, yet is distinctly different. Featuring heavy drum beat and slide guitar, it pays homage to Sutherland’s Indigenous culture with pow wow singing, chanting, and verse in Mushkegowuk Cree.

One year later… In 2019, a music video for Heart Of Gold was released. Shot in Attawapiskat, it features some of Adrian’s family and friends enjoying a ‘boat ride’ – with a fun reveal at the end that you won’t see coming! Since its release, the music video has earned over 266.5k views on YouTube, while the song has been streamed more than 133k times on Spotify.

The Magic Hits music video is out now, featuring Adrian strolling outdoors singing vocals alongside four legendary artists in split-screen performances shot in Attawapiskat ON, Toronto ON and Nashville TN.

Magic Hits is the third video from Sutherland in 2021 – no small feat considering he hasn’t left his remote Northern home since March 2020. All three videos plus another previously were made by the same team: director, animator and editor Justin Stephenson (Toronto), and creative producer and production manager RoseAnna Schick (Winnipeg), with Sutherland as executive producer.

Says Justin Stephenson: “Magic Hits is a song that celebrates those magic moments we all love, while urging us to not wait on the sidelines. We started working with the split-screen as a way of bringing Adrian’s collaborators together with him. Each of them created lovely space with their individual performances, and as we worked, the lines started to blur between them. The video brings everyone together, even though they are thousands of miles apart. No one is on the sidelines.”

ABOUT THE PRODUCTION

For the Nashville unit, a Google search netted Fool’s Pajamas Productions and three talented young videographers who captured footage at the home studio of Colin Linden. Producer of Magic Hits, Linden performs guitars and harmonies on the song, with wife Janice Powers on B3 organ. Random street scenes were also captured in Nashville.

In Toronto is Brian Gregory Creative, who previously shot for Adrian’s debut video Politician Man. Gregory captured footage of Gary Craig on drums in his home studio, and John Dymond on bass at Blue Sound and Music. Random street scenes in Toronto were also captured, including Adrian’s image on the giant Spotify billboard in Yonge-Dundas Square – coincidentally on display the day Gregory was scheduled to shoot.

In Attawapiskat, visuals were gotten with Adrian’s iPhone 12 and his brother. Andrew Sutherland happened to arrive into the community right about the time Adrian was looking for someone to help with the video. Andrew, who has a natural eye for and an interest in videography, captured Adrian’s vocals in three different locations, and footage of the streets of Attawapiskat.

Video batches were delivered digitally to Stephenson at Even Steven in Toronto, who thoughtfully pieced it all together in the editing suite with a little help from editor and animator Kash Tahen, and a little creative input from Schick and Sutherland. The rest, as they say, just might be magic…

You DIY it... and that's exactly what Adrian Sutherland did!

In the fall of 2020, Adrian began constructing and gearing up recording space inside a metal shipping container sitting quietly and idle on his property in Attawapiskat First Nation. Fast forward to spring 2021, and Adrian was able to work interactively with producers from inside his ‘sea-can studio’ recording music tracks for his debut solo album.

When The Magic Hits, released September 17, 2021, was produced remotely by GRAMMY Award-winning producer Colin Linden (produced seven tracks) working from Nashville, and acclaimed producer and engineer Tim Vesely (produced two tracks) working from Toronto. Each one enlisted studio musicians in their areas to perform on the songs. Adrian recorded vocal and acoustic guitar tracks at his SeaCan Studio and delivered the files remotely to the producers. A magical debut album is the first result from a once-silent shipping container!

A small video crew had travelled in the fall of 2018 to Attawapiskat, my home in Northern Ontario, to shoot the video. It was my first music video experience, and what started out as a simple idea turned into a pretty meaningful project.

The song was first inspired by events in my community. In 2016, had just gotten back from my month-long annual spring hunt out on the land, during which time I had no contact with the outside world. Upon returning, the first news I heard was that there had been a stream of suicide attempts in Attawapiskat – an isolated Cree village on the coast of the James Bay. Everyone was talking about it, and media across the country were covering what was being referred to as a ‘suicide crisis’ in Canada’s north.

I was shocked. Like many others, I just couldn’t understand what had happened. Why were these kids – they were kids, all of them – suddenly trying to take their own lives? It was devastating and it really bothered me. I didn’t know what to do, or how to help.

I recall talking to others, trying to learn about the issue. It was extremely difficult trying to pry information from frontline workers due to the sensitive nature and confidentiality of patients and clients, but one professional did confess there were over 30 attempts in the span of one month. Thirty attempts! That’s equal to one attempt per day! That was a truly startling number.

No one has the answers or knows how to deal directly with social issues, especially when it comes to remote places. Quite often the issues are complex and deep-rooted, stemming from intergenerational trauma that is not easy to heal. A lot of the social challenges quite largely get ignored because people simply don’t know where to start. This is especially true in Canada’s northern Indigenous communities, where adequate social and mental health resources are seriously lacking.

Even though I didn’t know what to do, I knew I had to do something. Being a musician and songwriter, the only way I could think of to try and help was to use my craft. So I wrote a song called I Need Angels. It tackles the topic of depression and suicide, while instilling hope with messaging about not giving up.

We chose I Need Angels for our debut music video, and a small video crew from Vancouver and Winnipeg travelled to Attawapiskat to shoot it. Being able to make this video in my community meant a lot to me, but I’m not going to lie – it has also taken a toll on my own mental health. I have to contend with my own challenges, because like most families in the north, we’re struggling, too. But I find it’s important and helpful for me to debrief and talk about what I’m feeling, and how all this affects me.

To be honest, I was reluctant to move forward with recording I Need Angels, because I felt it was a topic most people were not ready to talk about – especially people who have lost loved ones to suicide. But I’m glad I chose to move ahead with recording it, and including it on our third album, High Road, which was released last year.

With the release of the I Need Angels video in November 2018, and a lot of media interest in the story behind the video, I have had to talk about it many more times than I wanted to. Talking about it and thinking about it so intensely for several months has been tough, and often draining. There are times I wonder if I made the right choice to write this song and make this video, taking on such a difficult and sensitive topic.

And then at other times… I will receive an email or social media message from someone who has heard the song, or watched the video, and they wanted to write and say thank you. They wanted to let me know the song brings them hope, or has helped them or their loved ones in some way. At these times, it feels like the right choice, and it makes me proud to know that my music does make a difference.

It has also been nominated for Best Music Video.

The powerful protest song – Sutherland’s debut single as a solo artist – has been gaining audiences ever since its premiere on October 17, 2019, four days before Canada’s federal election. The video and its important message earned national media coverage at that time, and continues to garner attention today.

The Politician Man video was created by acclaimed animator and filmmaker Justin Stephenson (director of animation and editor of Gord Downie’s The Secret Path), and produced by Sutherland’s manager and video producer RoseAnna Schick.

The Americana-style song was written by Sutherland with brothers Chris Gormley and Matt Gormley, and produced and engineered by Carl Jennings at Westmoreland Recording in Hamilton.

The seeds for the song were planted in July 2019, when Attawapiskat First Nation – Sutherland’s isolated Cree community on the James Bay in remote Northern Canada – declared a state of emergency over contaminated water. At almost the exact same moment, insensitive comments about water from a thoughtless politician in Ottawa sparked massive public outcry, and national media coverage. Politician Man, a song that speaks to Canada’s troubled relationship with First Nations, was Sutherland’s response.

“The relationship between Canada and First Nations has been difficult for a long time, and in many ways it still is. Politician Man is about this relationship, and the need for all of us – politicians, chiefs, Indigenous people, all people – to start listening to each other, and move past the blaming. We all need to do our part to make real change happen. That’s the message behind Politician Man,” says Sutherland.

Born and born and raised in Attawapiskat – where he still resides today – Adrian has NEVER had drinkable water flowing into his home. For his entire 44-year-old life, he has had to collect clean drinking water from elsewhere. When he was younger, his family used to draw water straight from the river. These days, Attawapiskat has two dispensaries where families get their drinking water.

Or arriving at a session with another writer to discover they both shared the same song idea. Or being randomly paired on stage at a show with a musician he’d never met before, which led to a small tour later, where he would ultimately meet his album’s producer. Or his album producer’s own album being released on the same day as Adrian’s album, completely by chance...

Those are just a few of the ‘magic moments’ that found their way into the making of When The Magic Hits, the beautiful nine-track album that is out now. It features lead single Magic Hits, produced by GRAMMY Award-winning Colin Linden, who brings his heartfelt harmonies and mournful magical guitar to the song. Magic Hits was written by Sutherland along with previous collaborators Chris & Matt Gormley. Together, the three of them have some kind of magic indeed, evident in the three songs they wrote for this album (and two before).

ARTIST STATEMENT

Says Sutherland: “My new album is about deeper meaning for me. These songs allowed me to explore some personal stuff I've never been able to on past albums. Some of the themes are sensitive but it was important for me to write about them, like fighting through losses and traumas, and learning to appreciate everything I have today, because it hasn't always been clear to me.”

“The world we live in seems to be in chaos, with no signs of settling back down to 'normal' anytime soon. Some of these things scare me at times. Not knowing where all the love is, not knowing where we're heading as a country. Are we truly ready to walk with each other in a good way? I was thinking about all of these things as I was writing this album.”

“The songs are emotional, and powerful for me to listen to now. They move me in ways like nothing else I have written. The talent who came together to help me make this album – from the producers, to the musicians, to the songwriters who collaborated with me – their passion shines through in every song. I absolutely love this album and hold it close to my heart.”

Jerry Roe (Nashville) and Gary Craig (Toronto) both contributed drum tracks, with John Dymond (Toronto) providing bass.

Adding to the magic is Chris Carmichael. It was Linden’s 11th hour decision to bring on Carmichael, who all on his own added the passionate sounds of a full string quartet to Once That Was You (written with Semko) and Walk With Me (written with Ryder). It was only afterwards that Sutherland learned Carmichael has performed on nine GRAMMY winning records and 25 gold and platinum recordings…

Two album tracks – Right Here and Make Me Better – were produced, engineered and mixed by Tim Vesely at The Woodshed Studio in Toronto. It was co-written with Jay Semko in Saskatoon SK on Friday, March 13, 2020 – the day after the JUNO Awards were cancelled due to COVID-19.

Adrian and Jay had planned a co-writing meet-up while Adrian was in town to play JUNO Cup hockey, and despite the unbelievable news coming down all around them, they decided to forge ahead. They met in-person for the very first time in a Sheraton hotel meeting room, and in three hours penned this beautiful ballad about yearning for lost connections.

“Once That Was You is about longing for something or someone who touched your heart deeply. We were writing this song while everything was shutting down by the minute. It felt like the end of the world, that’s how we were both feeling – that line actually opens the song,” says Sutherland. “It’s definitely a ballad, probably the first real ballad I’ve ever written. Jay writes from a place of deep emotion, and that approach was at the heart of our writing session.”

Says Jay Semko: “Sometimes songs are there waiting to be brought into our world. Adrian is such a natural writer and, despite the strange circumstances we were creating under, the words and music just organically flowed. It was an amazing cosmic connection, and I remember feeling a real sense of serenity as we finished writing the song.”

PRODUCED BY COLIN LINDEN

Once That Was You was produced, engineered, and mixed by Colin Linden, who also performs guitars on the track. Working from his Pinhead Recorders studio in Nashville, with Adrian working from his SeaCan Studio in remote Attawapiskat First Nation, they were able to make some beautiful music together during the pandemic – across international borders, without either of them leaving home.

Says Sutherland about Once That Was You: “Colin did an amazing job drawing you into the melody of this song. When he suggested adding strings to it, I loved that idea! It turned out even more beautiful than I ever imagined it could be.”

Says Linden: “When I first heard Once That Was You, it struck me as the sound of heartbreak and humility – grace under pain…. And like another conduit of emotion – the great Roy Orbison – Adrian’s voice cried out for strings and atmosphere to deliver the message.”

Joining Adrian and Colin on the track is Chris Carmichael (Nashville TN) on strings, Jerry Roe (Nashville TN) on drums, and Johnny Dymond (Toronto ON) on bass – each working remotely from their own recording spaces during the pandemic. The song was mastered by João Carvalho, with artwork by artistic designer Nick Perreault.

Once That Was You is one of seven songs that Colin Linden produced for Sutherland’s album debut. The full album – When The Magic Hits – is slated for release September 17, 2021.

SONGWRITERS ON THE ALBUM

In addition to Jay Semko, Adrian co-wrote for When The Magic Hits with several stellar songwriters, including brothers Chris Gormley and Matt Gormley, Scott Dibble, Tim Vesely, Colin Cripps, and Serena Ryder.

What do you do when you live in an isolated location with no video crews, no video gear, and you need to make a music video? One option is to spend six weeks shooting a shitload of selfies, handing them over to a talented filmmaker, and letting the magic happen… which is exactly what Adrian Sutherland did…

“Right Here is a song about being there for the people that you love and care about – and also having those people that you love and care about being there for you, too,” says Sutherland. “It made sense for the music video to give a glimpse into my life and share with viewers some of the people and places that mean the most to me.”

ABOUT THE MUSIC VIDEO

With Sutherland isolated in Attawapiskat First Nation since the start of the pandemic, any visuals needed for the video had to be attainable by Sutherland himself. Filmmaker and animator Justin Stephenson came up with the clever concept.

“The video for Right Here draws inspiration from people’s travel selfies. I was struck by the idea of an ever-changing world around a steadfast and constant subject,” says Stephenson, who has worked with Sutherland before on two previous music videos.

“This idea evolved even further, though, as Adrian sent photos and we started to put them to the song. What started as an expression of personal presence became a story about relationships with family, friends, place, and the land. Being ‘right here’ is about being home. It’s a perfect song for the times we are in.”

Sutherland loved the idea, even though he knew that capturing the photos would be a big task. “I took over 1600 pics on my iPhone 12 over the course of six weeks,” says Sutherland. “At first it seemed overwhelming to have to shoot that many selfies, and to frame them all consistently, too. But once I got the hang of it, the pictures added up quickly. It turned out to be a fun look into my world.”

“Some challenging moments were taking selfies while operating the boat, and making sure I didn’t crash into anything. Some of the most fun moments were getting some of my family into the shots, and even one of my dogs, too. Also the great-horned owlet we rescued last month – we even managed to get him in the video, too.”
