Adrian Sutherland received a deeply moving surprise during his first-ever appearance at Newfoundland’s Writers at Woody Point Festival, where he was presented with a Quilt of Valour in recognition of more than 20 years of service as a Master Corporal with the Canadian Ranger Patrol in the James Bay region.

The unexpected presentation took place during an author meet-and-greet hosted by Uxbridge, Ontario independent bookstore, Blue Heron Books. Sutherland was gathered with fellow authors and festival guests when Lisa Compton, President of Quilts of Valour – Canada, presented him with the quilt in recognition of his decades of service and commitment to his community and country.

Quilts of Valour – Canada is a national charity dedicated to creating high-quality, handmade quilts that are presented to Canadian military service members and veterans as a heartfelt expression of gratitude and appreciation for their service.

“Before Writers at Woody Point, I had read Adrian’s book and listened to his music,” said Lisa Compton, President of Quilts of Valour – Canada. “Presenting Adrian his quilt felt very similar to presenting a quilt to someone I served with in Afghanistan. I felt very proud to call him a brother in arms and fellow Canadian.”

Sutherland was visibly moved by the unexpected honour, while many of the audience members gathered for the presentation were also brought to tears as they witnessed the tribute.

“We call it a Hug from a Grateful Nation,” Compton said. “Once we wrap a veteran in their quilt, they feel how important they are to me, to everyone who helped make that quilt, and to everyone in the room. It’s our way of saying thank you for your service.”

Adorned with symbolic red poppies, the quilt was then draped around Sutherland by two distinguished Newfoundland women: legendary entertainer Mary Walsh and Elaine Kirkland Huxter, a recipient of the Order of Newfoundland.

Walsh’s own connection to Canada’s military community made the presentation especially meaningful. In 2006, she travelled to Kandahar, Afghanistan, where she spent Christmas entertaining Canadian Armed Forces personnel stationed at the military base and helping boost their morale.

Compton explained that while it would have been ideal to present Sutherland with the quilt in Attawapiskat, surrounded by his wife Judy, children and grandchildren, Woody Point became the next best place for the surprise. Surrounded by fellow writers, musicians, festival guests who admire his work, and Newfoundlanders who hold Canada’s military community in high regard, Sutherland was still wrapped in the support and gratitude that Compton hoped the presentation would convey.

While Sutherland is known as an award-winning musician, author and advocate, his service as a Canadian Ranger has been an important part of his life alongside his artistic career. For more than two decades, he has served in the James Bay region, bringing his local knowledge and experience to the Canadian Rangers’ role.

The Canadian Rangers are a specialized sub-component of the Canadian Army Reserve, with members providing deep local knowledge, survival skills and expert advice when other military personnel and units operate in remote and northern regions.

The Quilt of Valour served as a heartfelt recognition of that longstanding service, offering a powerful reminder of the many ways Sutherland has contributed to his community and country beyond his work in music and writing.

The presentation became one of the most memorable moments of Sutherland’s visit to Newfoundland, bringing an unexpected and emotional close to his debut appearance at Writers At Woody Point.
