In recognition of World Suicide Prevention Day, Adrian Sutherland released Left Behind, a new song and music video that shines a light on the mental health challenges faced by many people in isolated communities, where access to services and support can often fall short. The release offers a message of understanding and reassurance to those who may be struggling: you are not forgotten.
“Mental health can be a struggle for people in remote First Nations. It’s sometimes difficult for those who are struggling to find the help they need, and it’s heartbreaking to see so many slip through the cracks,” says Sutherland, who has spoken openly about his own mental health struggles over the years. “I wrote this song to acknowledge those who are struggling, and to validate them as human beings who are having a hard time."

Left Behind reflects on the difficulties many people in remote First Nations communities can face when seeking mental health support. Through the song, Sutherland acknowledges these experiences and gives voice to those navigating difficult times.
The song was produced and mixed by Colin Linden in Nashville and mastered by João Carvalho in Toronto.
ABOUT THE VIDEO
The accompanying music video was filmed in Vancouver while Sutherland was in the city for the 2025 JUNO Awards. Captured across changing urban settings, the footage reflects the uncertainty and chaos that can come with constantly changing environments.
The video follows a journey back to the water, the land, and ultimately to oneself, where peace can be found. The changing surroundings give way to a sense of reconnection, reflecting the importance of grounding oneself and returning to what feels familiar.
The video was produced and co-directed by Sutherland’s longtime manager, RoseAnna Schick, with Cliff Hokanson serving as co-director and cinematographer. Sutherland served as executive producer. Bethany Fontaine edited the video, with colour grading completed by Tony Wytinck. The team has worked together on several of Sutherland’s previous music videos.
Additional Vancouver-based crew members included Jesse Davidson, Emily Manley, Dmytro Lutsenko, and Jaclyn Frailick as camera assistants; Dallas Groening as gaffer; and Marco Ashley Dixon as grip.
With Left Behind, Sutherland continues to use his music to reflect on the realities of life in remote communities and create space for conversations around mental health. The release pairs a deeply personal song with a visual story of uncertainty, reconnection, and finding a sense of peace in nature.
